Ingredients for Homemade Hamburger Helper

  • Ground Beef: 80/20 or your preference.
  • Butter: Used to saute the onion in. You could substitute oil.
  • Yellow Onion: Adds nice flavor to the dish when caramelized with the beef.
  • Garlic Powder: Adds garlic flavor without having to bite down on any garlic pieces.
  • Tomato Paste: A hint of rich tomato flavor in the background and also darkens the color of the sauce.
  • Turmeric Powder: Just a pinch for bright color.
  • Flour: Used to thicken the sauce.
  • Beef Broth: Deglazes the pan and creates a flavorful base for your sauce.
  • Heavy Cream: Makes the sauce rich and creamy. Milk could be used in a pinch.
  • Cheddar Cheese: Adds flavor and thickens the sauce. I use orange cheddar for the color but you could use any cheese on hand.

What to serve with this recipe?

Steamed carrots and broccoli, or a green salad with a punchy vinagerette. Avoid creamy salad dressings as the dish is quite creamy and heavy.

How to store this recipe?

This recipe can be stored in a airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. It also freezes well, thaw in the fridge over night and reheat in the oven for 20 minutes.
