This Hawaiian Style Chili is:

  • chunky and meaty
  • cooks in under 30 minutes
  • totally customizable

You can find chili in almost any mom and pop store in Hawaii, even gas stations sell bowls of chili!

All of them are similar in flavor and style, but each with a unique family twist.

The thing they ALL have in common though, is they are served on sticky white rice.

Maybe a Texan just read that and fainted.

But don’t knock it till you try it!

Ingredients for Hawaiian Style Chili

chili ingredients on a wood countertop
  • ground beef - I use 80/20, use whatever beef you have on hand
  • yellow onion - sweet onions work best
  • garlic - use as much or as little as you like
  • chili powder - any blend will work
  • kidney beans - a staple in Hawaiian chili, but totally optional!
  • beef broth - chicken stock is a great substitute
  • diced tomato - leave out if you don’t like chunks of tomato in your chili
  • brown sugar - sweetness to balance all the flavors
  • tomato sauce - thickens the sauce *not pictured*

How to store this chili?

Transfer cooled chili to an airtight container or large ziplock bag. Keep in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or the freezer for up to a month. Thaw in the fridge overnight, or heat frozen chili in a pot with a ½ cup of water on low heat.

How to customize this chili?

A common add in for this chili is cut up sausages or hot dogs. Corn kernels are also very popular as well. My husbands favorite is leftover steak that I cube up and add toward the end of cooking.

How to serve this chili?

Traditionally served over a bowl of sticky white rice and topped with shredded cheese, sour cream, and diced yellow onion. Corn bread and pickled onions are often served along side.
